TRIVIA ANSWER

The answer is psychology and expert endorsements.

This clever marketing strategy that convinced Americans to start eating bacon for breakfast was devised by Edward Bernays, the "father of public relations."

In the 1920s, Bernays was hired by the Beech-Nut Packing Company to boost demand for their bacon. Instead of directly advertising the product, Bernays turned to experts his customers trusted doctors.

He had a doctor on his PR agency's staff write to thousands of other physicians, asking if a heartier breakfast would be better for people's health. Over 4,500 doctors wrote back agreeing, providing Bernays the expert endorsement he needed.

Bernays pitched this story to newspapers, which ran headlines about "4,500 physicians urging Americans to eat heavy breakfasts."

This effectively positioned bacon and eggs as the perfect hearty breakfast choice, transforming it into an iconic American meal in 70% of bacon is now consumed.

That’s a wrap!
